Leibniz Universität Hannover, Germany (LUH)

L3S is a joint research institute of several universities in Lower Saxony, Germany. Work at L3S focuses on innovative and cutting-edge methods and technologies for three key enablers for the European Information Society: Knowledge, Information and Learning. Projects investigate innovative scenarios and solutions in the areas of Semantic Web Technologies, Technology Enhanced Learning, Search and Information Retrieval, Distributed and Peer-to-Peer Information Systems, Digital Libraries and Databases. L3S was coordinator of the EU/IST Network of Excellence PROLEARN and participates in several new EU/IST Integrated Projects, including PROLIX, TENCompetence, Grapple, OKKAM and Liwa. The latter project is coordinated by the L3S. The PRO-LC Cluster integrates these and other EU/IST projects investigating innovative solutions for technology enhanced learning, knowledge management and business processes. Semantic Web Reasoning, Metadata Management, Trust and Security Policies and Personalization are investigated in two EU/IST Networks of Excellence, KnowledgeWeb and REWERSE. Edutella, iSearch and NEPOMUK, an EU/IST IP started in 2006, focus on distributed search and information retrieval, the use of semantic and metadata information on the desktop, and on sophisticated ranking algorithms for personalized information retrieval, task specific access to information, and spam detection and avoidance. The NEPOMUK Social Semantic Desktop integrates many of these aspects and will allow personalized and extremely precise search on personal desktops and connected repositories to work groups and other social networks. The PHAROS IP, started in 2007, focuses on audio/visual search, providing a modular user-centered search platform, with advanced annotation modules and advanced user and context functionalities to personalize search.
