K.U.Leuven has been a centre of learning for almost six centuries, is a charter member of the League of European Research Universities, and European surveys rank it among the top ten European universities in terms of its scholarly output. As part of the Computer Science department of K.U.Leuven, research in the "HyperMedia and DataBases" group focuses on the management of and access to data and content, available in a more or less structured way. The overall goal is to provide flexible, effective and efficient access to large-scale collections in a way that goes beyond what typical search engines provide.
Apart from a large number of conference and journal publications, the strong involvement in national and international successful research and development projects documents the success of HMDB research. The work of the HMDB group is at the core of the technical infrastructure of the ARIADNE Foundation, four European eContentPlus projects (MACE, on architecture, and MELT for K-12 and the soon-to-be-starting ASPECT and iCOPER projects), as well as a Flemish IBBT project (ACKNOWLEDGE). We coordinated research on learning objects, metadata and interoperability in the European Network of Excellence ProLearn. We are deeply involved in technical standardization efforts in the IEEE LTSC and CEN/ISSS WSLT. We are partners in two European FP-6 STREP projects (CLASS and AntiPhish), in the FP-7 European infrastructure project CLARIN, in the European ITEA 2 project LINDO, in the Dutch-Flemish Stevin project CORNETTO and associate partners in the FP6 KDubiq, the Network PASCAL and euCognition. We coordinate the Flemish IWT-SBO project AMASS++ and the International Flanders CADIAL project. We are the sole academic partner in the projects TIME (IWOIB sponsored) and ACILA (K.U.Leuven sponsored). In 2006, we created two spin-off companies (Aristomusic and @mire): we continue to collaborate with them in joint research.
