First call for applicants for the Doctoral Mobility Programme (2010)

What is STELLAR?

STELLAR is a Network of Excellence, supported by the European Commission, which aims to unify the diverse research community in the field of Technology Enhanced Learning in Europe. As such, STELLAR offers many opportunities for researchers in the field to exchange views, ideas and practices.

What is the Doctoral Mobility Programme?

The mobility programme aims to foster dialogue and collaboration between doctoral  and researchers within the TEL field by promoting mobility and creating a mechanism for targeted scholarships for doctoral students to spend time in core labs.

The programme includes a two-month visit to a host site with similar or complementary research interests. The work in this period will follow a  plan agreed on by the host, the doctoral researcher and his/her supervisor and the STELLAR Doctoral Academy Board. The research has to be clearly linked to the STELLAR Grand Challenges and the associated research questions.

Funding

A Scholarship of up to €1,000 will be granted to 10 top-ranked applicants to support travel and accommodation expenses. The amount will be reimbursed following the completion of the visit and based on presentation of receipts. The candidate will also be expected to provide evidence that the expected output (see below) is underway and nearing completion.

Excellence Award: One excellence award of €800 will be made to a participant based on evaluation of the merit of the participant’s work, by the host and the Doctoral Academy Board. This amount will support the winner’s attendance at a TEL-related event, where he/she will be able to present their work.

Why should YOU apply?

The programme offers you the opportunity to:

  • Collaborate with leading researchers and industry members in Technology Enhanced Learning;
  • Expand your TEL horizons by exchanging ideas with researchers working within different disciplines;
  • Disseminate the results of your research through the wide network of instruments, contacts and events offered by STELLAR;
  • Establish fruitful and longstanding scientific relationships with joint publication as a first outcome.

What is the Expected Output?

According to a pre-set research plan, participants will produce a final outcome, which could be in the form of a scientific paper, a conference paper, a workshop. In addition, participants will be asked to submit periodic progress reports and engage in the STELLAR virtual community.

The quality of products will be evaluated for the purpose of granting an excellence award and disseminating via STELLAR channels.

Who can apply?

Mid and late-stage doctoral candidates are eligible to apply, whether members of STELLAR or not.

How to Apply?

Visit the STELLAR website http://www.stellarnet.eu/ to find out more details about the programme, view the available hosts and evaluation criteria and fill in the application forms. The completed forms should be submitted via the website by January 15th, 2009, at 17:00.

What are the topics for research?

Topics should be related to the STELLAR Grand Challenges and applications should explain clearly where the topic fits into the Grand Challenges and how research in this topic will contribute to developing the community’s understanding of issues within the Grand Challenges.

Candidates will need to demonstrate how their proposed projects will benefit from exposure to expertise and different cultures in the host institutions. They should explain how the host institution will be able to make a contribution to their project.

It is expected that an outline project plan will be included with the application. This should provide an idea of the proposed data collection and analysis methods and the timetable for completion.
