1 1. Starting points

The philosophical approach adopted for the roadmap draws on the notion of ‘the wisdom of the crowds’ (Surowiecki, 2004) which suggests that xxxxx. Importantly, this approach has been ‘bottom-up’ rather than ‘top down’ and evolved in an organic rather than being pre-determined from the start.

As a starting point, the UB team asked the wider STELLAR community to recommend reading related to producing a TEL vision and strategy statement (roadmap). UB put together the recommended readings and used these as a basis for choosing further readings. The readings were entered into an Endnote library and the list of readings, together with abstracts (where available) was distributed to the STELLAR network and posted onto the STELLAR web site. See the full list plus abstracts, where available.

UB sees this list as the beginning of a much larger library and the idea is that all of STELLAR will contribute to the list.

The readings chosen were intended to help understand the following:

  • What is a roadmap?
  • What is meant by ‘grand challenges’ in research?
  • What does TEL mean?
  • What is the current state of TEL?
  • What might happen in the future in TEL?
  • What research could be needed to inform future developments in TEL?
